2/10/08: Return of Shroomfest! :
Shroomfest is officially returning. It's going to be a 16 team tournament held here at Bucknell on March 22nd and 23rd (only open teams). It'll be $175 to attend, and it'll include normal food and water and possibly prizes for the winning team. Send bids to bucknellultimate@gmail.com with your team name in the subject. Include fall results.
11/23/07: Fall Season Wrap Up :
Our fall season has just finished with the tournament at University of Delaware. We went to Founders Club Sectionals, Penn State Fall Phling, Danse Macabre, and Delaware Showdown. The results are in the schedule section. We were hampered by injuries all season, but we still did alright. Being a young team, we have a lot to build on. The team is made up of 1 sr, a handful of juniors and the rest sophomores and freshmen. We got a large freshmen class this year and used the tournaments to get them as much experience as we could. We're all very excited for the spring with the return of the injured and abroad players. We'll have a very busy off season.
8/18/07: Upcoming Fall Season:
IF YOU'RE INTERESTED IN PLAYING FOR THE MUDSHARKS THIS YEAR:
We have an interest meeting scheduled for TUESDAY AUGUST 28th at 8PM in the LC FORUM. You do not need any prior experience, just show up at the meeting and we'll give you all the information you need.
6/8/07: Regionals:
Sorry it took so long to update the site. A quick recap: we held seed in pool play with a great comeback in the Queens game to avenge our loss from last year. There was no wind at all for the first game, then it started to pick up by the UPenn game, and by the Queens game the gusts were Salisbury-esque. We played Maryland for the 4th game of the day. We were absolutely dead....like always not having a deep team hurt us. On Sunday Princeton didn't show up, so we won that one, then we played SUNY Albany and won 15-12. The scores are posted in the schedule section if you want to see those.
I've been working on putting together a dvd of all of the tournaments we taped this year (Yale Cup, Sectionals, Regionals). The video quality isn't fantastic, but I did the best with what I had. The dvd is basically done, and I'm thinking of how I'm going to distribute it: possibly mail some to alums, bring a few to MARS for the people who are attending that (if we get a team for it), and just hand the rest out next semester.
Also, the freshmen (sophomores now) bios are finally finished just in time to get a whole new class of incoming freshmen, sweet.
4/24/07: Sectionals:
After getting rained out two weekends ago, sectionals was rescheduled to this past weekend, and the fields were moved from a great soccer complex in Pittsburgh to some fairgrounds in the middle of nowhere. Despite the poor field conditions (ruts and holes on the fields and power lines lining the fields), the weather was great. We went into the tournament seeded 6th out of 16 teams, thinking that there were 5 bids to regionals. However, after arriving we found out that because four teams had to drop due to the rescheduling, there were only 4 bids with 7 teams who actually had a shot at getting them: Pitt, Edinboro, Messiah, Penn State, us, CMU, and Pitt B. We were also missing one of our main handlers, Riblet, due to a torn rotator cuff.
We had easy wins in our first two games against California of PA and Pittsburgh-Johnstown. The 3rd game of the first day was against Messiah, who was 1 in the pool. Messiah led by 1 or 2 the whole way until the end where they pulled away to win 15-11. For the last game of the day we had our first game of the 2/3 bracket against Pitt B. We played pretty well, but they turned it a lot, and we won 15-4.
On Sunday, our first game was against Penn State. We came out strong, going up 6-3 at one point in the first half, but we started turning it over too much and didn't play great defense in the long run. They ended up winning 15-11. In order to make regionals we had to win the last 3 games of the day. Making it even harder, we only had 11 people capable of playing. The next game was against Shippensburg, which we easily won 15-8. Then we were given a chance to knock CMU, one of our rivals, out of regionals. We were up the whole game despite giving them two points in a row in the first half due to a dropped pull and a first throw Callahan. We won the game 15-11 or so. For our last game, we were given the chance to redeem our first loss of the day and keep our regionals hopes alive against Penn State. We were all dead going into the game until the bombers arrived with Gatorade, crackers, and trail mix, which gave us a lot more energy that we really needed. After trading points until 2-2, we went up a couple breaks and took half 8-5. We pulled to them following the half, and they scored two straight points bringing it to 8-7. We kept a one or two point lead for awhile and then scored the last few following a handful of Weener and LJ D's to win the game 15-11, securing the last spot in the Metro East regionals.
We really came together as a team this weekend and played easily the best ultimate we have ever played. Next up is regionals in 2 weeks at Edinboro.
3/29/07: Atlantis and Savannah:
There's not much to say about Atlantis. It was ridiculously windy, which meant a ton of turns and there were very slow-paced games. Not a great tournament, especially because of the steak knifes, glass shards, and worst of all spike balls on the fields.
Savannah was amazing. The weather was nice, and the houses were huge and a lot of fun. The first day, we played with Wooster all game then went ahead at the end for the win. Next, we played Conn College B, who we beat handily, and last was Vermont. We were up 12-10 at the end of that game and let them score 3 straight points to get the win 13-12. The next day was power pools. Our pool consisted of us, CMU, Wesleyan, and SUNY-Geneseo. After a close game, we lost to CMU 13-11. We needed to win our next to in order to advance to the championship bracket for day 3. Of course we decided it would be a good idea for everybody to drop and throw away discs all game, so we lost 13-7. Last game of the day, we beat SUNY-Geneseo 13-9. For day 3, we were in the chumpionship bracket, in which we won all 3 of our games with UPA shutouts against NYU, Colorado State, and Ithica.
We just started practicing outside again this week. It's been a great week so far; everyone in really coming ready to practice, and we are practicing hard with a lot less messing around. Our next tournament is Yale Cup, April 7 and 8. The weekend after that is sectionals in Pittsburgh.
2/24/07: Spring Semester! Part II :
There's been a very good turnout at all spring practices so far. We've also been renting out an indoor field every Wednesday night to scrimmage for an hour, at which Team Weener is currently undefeated. Our first tournament is almost upon us. We are going to Salisbury next weekend which will hopefully be a much better tournament than last year. The week after that is spring break, which we will spend in Savannah, GA playing in the High Tide tournament. The tournament we were trying to host most likely isn't going to happen this year due to troubles with getting fields. (There's always next year.)
1/22/07: Spring Semester! :
Until the weather is good enough to practice outside we will have practice every Tues and Thurs at 6:15 in the fieldhouse to work on conditioning and so Sensei Weener and Sensei LJ can pass down to us the vast amount of ultimate knowledge they have. We'll try book an indoor field a few times, so we can get some scrimmages. The first tournament will hopefully happen in less than a month, with Savannah following soon after that (not soon enough). Also, I vote for a 2 week spring break. I'll try and get a petition signed and sent to the school so we can get that changed by Savannah. Seriously though, we're in the process of trying to host a tournament at the end of March. Freshmen bios and updated bios for everyone else hopefully to follow the next time I'm in the right state of mind to write those. Oh yeah, and check out the links for a link to a youtube video of us last year at regionals.
11/6/06: Penn State Tournament :
Our first game was against Penn State B. We started out slow, trading points until it was around 3-3, then we threw some zone and only let them score one more point the rest of the game. The next game was against Edinboro, who we hadn't faced since Sectionals in the spring. We started off this game incredibly flat and playing with no desire to win at all, making stupid throws and dropping easy catches. Before we knew it, it was halftime, and we were down 8-1. After making a small comeback, we still needed a little extra, so K-Swiss came out for the first time this season. We played a lot better in the second half but not well enough to win. Edinboro won 15-10. The next game was a quick win over NYU 15-3, not much to say about that one. Finally, we finished the day playing Rutgers. We played well at first, going up by a few points and holding the lead. Then our cuts stopped coming for some reason, and we let them close in, but we ended strong with the score 15-12 in our favor.
We were a little disappointed to have to play Penn State B again to start off Day 2 because we wanted to play a team we hadn't already played twice. Our defense was terrible; we traded points with them for the entire first half, taking half 8-7. We realized at half we couldn't let them score anymore. So we didn't let them. 15-7. Next was the game we had been looking forward to all tournament: Penn State A. Riblet's fire and desire to win this one led us to an early 5-1 lead including two back-to-back hammer scores by Riblet and Weener. Going into half, we let them score a few more, and before we knew it the cap was going on and the score was 10-8. After a long point, Penn State scored to make it 10-9, making this point a must score for us. We scored it on a very risky, floating throw to Sheedy in the back of the endzone. After it deflected off a couple people, Hands was there to pick up the trash and score this last point to end it at 11-9. The next game was the championship against Edinboro. We played very sloppily throughout this one, falling back into how to played the first time we played them. There were way too many turnovers on very easy catches and throws. Edinboro ended up winning 15-9. For some reason, after this we had to play for 2nd place against Lehigh. We didn't really have any desire to win this one. Everyone was slow and tired. Final score Lehigh 15, Bucknell 8. Technically we ended up taking 3rd place even though we lost in the championship, so I'd think it would be 2nd.
10/29/06: Upcoming Events :
This weekend coming up we are going to Penn State for an 8 team tournament. If UDel accepts our bid, we'll have one more tournament at UDel on the weekend of Nov. 18th. A lot of good teams will be at this one, so it'll be very competitive.
10/23/06: Haverween Results :
We ended up coming in 3rd when we really should have won it. I guess that's how we roll. Scores of each game are in the Schedule link. I'll give a more detailed write-up when I get some more time.
10/2/06: Yale Coffee Cup Results :
Friday night we realized we might be in some trouble this weekend. When we met at the LC, we looked around and thought we were still waiting on several people, only to realize that the 11 of us were the only ones who were going to the tournament. Armed with a grad student, 2 seniors, 0 juniors, 5 sophmores, and 3 freshmen, we set out for Connecticut.
Our first game on Saturday against UConn, flew right by. We got a UPA shutout, holding them to only 4 points. Having this quick first game was exactly what we needed to hopefully keep us rested for the 3 more games we were going to play that day. Unfortunately, next round we had a 2.5 hr bye, which we spent doing some sweet mad libs. We had some great ones including: a salad with used con.....hmmmm, can't say that one. How about: a tuna can cho....damn it, can't say that one on here either. Well let's just say that one involved Gizzard and a certain petting zoo.
After the long bye we played Brandeis. We traded points at the beginning until it was around 3-3. Then came the longest point I've ever seen. Both teams would make it the whole way down the field then turn it in the redzone again and again. After awhile, we decided to stop standing there and actually start cutting, and we scored the point. We ended up winning 15-11, but we slacked a little at the end. We should have won by more. The length of this game really hurt us. All 11 of us were basically drained by the end of it.
For the next game we had to drive around the Yale Bowl to some other fields to play UMass. We were pretty tired going into this one, but by the way we played, we looked a lot more tired than we really were. Our defense was lacking and we turned it about 4 or 5 times on the dump. UMass took half 8-3 or 4. After a "do something" cheer going into the second half, we turned it up and started playing a lot better. After a few controversial calls, mainly one where Pat skied some kid in the endzone and the kid said they caught it at the same time, we had the game tied at 12. But we didn't score for the rest of the game, and we lost 15-12.
The last game of the day was a joke. We played Williams, and they had an full O-line and D-line. We were all drained and couldn't keep up with their quick long cuts...or any of their cuts for that matter. They won it 13-6.
We only had one real game on Sunday. It was against Harvard, and the Mudsharks came ready to play. They couldn't stop our ho-stack or our zone on their upwind points. We took the game 15-10. We were supposed to sit around for the next 3 or 4 hours in order to play Princeton at 2:30, but neither team wanted wait that long, so we played RPS for each point of the game. We started terribly and were down 8-3 when our RPS skill started to kick in. The game ended 17-15 us, with Evil getting the MVP going 4 for 4 in his points.
9/23/06: Practices and Freshmen:
Practice has been going on for almost a month now from 4-6 at mod field #6. The freshmen are shaping up great. A lot of them will definitely contribute to the team this year because of our smaller number of upperclassmen.
I'll continue to update this site. There are a bunch of pictures from Sectionals I'll put up this week, and the bios will be updated, including adding ones for the freshmen.
9/17/06: Club Sectionals Results:
This was really our first time playing a real game together after losing 8 seniors last year, and we played pretty well overall, despite playing down to a few teams. The first game was against a weak CMU split roster, which we won 13-4. Next was a young, quick Columbia HS team. They ran us the whole game, and it was a little closer than it should have been, with Bucknell winning 13-11. Following this, we played Penn State B. We started the game strong, going out to a big lead to start. Thinking we had the game sealed, we got really sloppy and really played down to their level. After realizing how close it was getting, we kicked it into gear and finished the game winning 13-10. Going into the last game against Pike we really just wanted to have fun playing a very good team. The game was close at the beginning, but Pike ran away with it after the half. The final score was 13-8.
Day 2 started with a game against Snakes on Crack (Franklin & Marshall with a few more people). We won that fairly easily 15-7. The masters team Old SAG was next, with all of their players over the age of 35. Despite this fact, they were all fast and in great shape. They won this one 15-8. The next game was against the other high school team in the tournament, Pennsbury. There were a few controversial calls in this game, which led to some angry players and one furious mom who knew everything about Ultimate. This game came right down to the wire and was easily the most exciting of the tournament. Pennsbury ended up winning 16-14, with Jimmy "doing that thing he does" to score their last point. The last game of the day was against Pitt B. After suffering a tough loss right before this, Dash was drained and single-handedly blew the game for us. His main mistake was starting the game by throwing scissors instead of paper, but his performance throughout the whole game really lost it for us. The final score was 2-1 in favor of Pitt's RPS champion.
Overall: 4-3 (not counting the Pitt game) 7th place
3/27/06:Regionals Results:
First off, thanks to Bruce, Buda, Fish, Booboo, and Fold for making the trip out
to come support us. It was definitely appreciated by the team and I know it
really helped to have you guys when we were down.
Game 1: Bucknell v. Swathmore
A team that has had our number all year, The Mudsharks came out firing and ready
to
go.
On the strength of our zone defense and ho-stack offense, Mudsharks surged to
an
early 5-0 lead and pretty much cruised to a 15-8 win. Swat was clearly
frustrated with the tireless work of the cup and made swilly throws that our
longs ate up.
Game 2: Bucknell v. Pittsburgh
The number 1 seed in the tourney and nationally ranked, Pitt was definitely a
force to be reckoned with. We had great respect for them going in, but they
lost
it
by
the end of the game. Scoring on our first possesion, we realized that we could
run
with these guys. Mudsharks proceed to trade points with Pitt the entire first
half, eventually losing half 7-8. However, the sharp offense of Pitt was too
much to stop and Mudsharks lose 9-15. This game did show us that we could roll
with one of the best teams in the country.
Game 3: Bucknell v. CMU
Yet another team that has had our number all year, Bucknell desperately wanted
a win. But, in true Mudshark fashion we come out flat, falling behind 4-1 with
things looking desperate. A timeout and Feldman speech later, Bucknell roars
back with a 7-0 run to close out the half 8-4. We go on to win the game easily
15-9. This end CMU's run at Regionals.
Game 4: Bucknell v. Queens-Kingston
Winner of this game earned the right to play on the second day. After the first
point, it was clear that this was a game of attrition. Both teams were
completely gassed, with barely enough energy left to make any cuts. The first
team to go on a run would win this game. Unfortunately, that team was Queens.
We traded points with them until 3-3, then they went on a run and never looked
back. Bucknell finishes an incredible season with a loss 9-15.
The Mudsharks finish the year at 32-9, with a respectable 7th place finish at
regionals. To fuel the rivalry with Swat a little more, they finished 4th overall
even though we crushed them in our first game. Regardless, we finally learned
that Bucknell can run with the big boys any day of the week.
3/27/06:Sectionals Results:
Day 1:
With only 3 bids to regionals this year, sectionals looked to be a battle from
the beginning. With two relatively easy games against Gettysburg and
Dickinson, 15-5 and 15-4 respectively, the Mudsharks were ready to play the game
of
the
day
against our rivals Edinboro. This game featured some pretty intense play, with
Edinboro up by 2 throughout much of the game. With the score at 9-11 Edinboro
and the team looking deflated, Bucknell takes a time-out. With a K-swiss cheer,
Bucknell comes back to tie it at 11s, then goes on to win 15-11.
Day 2:
In true Mudshark fashion, we came out sluggish against Pitt B, falling early to
a 4-5 score. After a Bucknell timeout, we proceed to score 11 straight to win
the game 15-5. Next up is CMU. Falling behind early, we were
never really able to catch up, or to match their intensity. Key point of the
game occurs when a CMU player clap-spikes a disc, a violation of UPA rules, which causes a 10 minutes debate between the teams.
Sharks end up losing 7-15. Next up is
Messiah College, who have come out of nowhere to become contenders in the
section. We again look sluggish, trading points until Messiah goes on a run
and before we know it, we're down 6-11. With the season on the line, Bucknell
takes a timeout. One K-swiss cheer later, Bucknell goes on a 9-1 run to win
the game 15-12. This sets up a rematch with Pitt B for the right to go to
sectionals. We win this one easily, 15-6, and take the last bid.
Overall record: 6-1, 3rd place.
Regionals will be in two weeks in Princeton if anyone is interested in coming
out to watch us. Preliminary talk on RSD has us seeded anywhere between 8-11.
3/27/06:Huck of the Amish Champions!!:
This weekend, the Mudsharks went 8-0 to win Huck of the Amish in Lancaster, PA.
Wins came over Colgate, NYU, RPI, Penn State, Connecticut College, Ithaca, Swarthmore,
and Messiah. The finals proved to be an exciting game, against a very
athletic Messiah team. The Mudsharks went down early, 0-3, but then played well
to take half 8-6. The sharks kept rolling in the second half, and ended the game
on a 5-0 run. Final score was Bucknell 15, Messiah 9. The winners trophy was
a
gold
painted
pitchfork, with a small plaque showing the tournament name and date. I'll try
to get a picture of the trophy up on the site soon.
The Mudsharks take a break from Ultimate now, with our next tournament being Sectionals on April 15-16.
3/20/06:Here's a quick recap of Huck of the Irish and Savannah:
At Huck of the Irish, the Sharks went
3-1 on day 1, lossing the opening game to Maryland 13-9, but beating John Hopkins,
Boston College, and Hofstra. The Second day the Sharks got off to a good start
with a 13-8 win over Penn State, and then put a scare into 22nd ranked Ohio
State
by taking half 7-3. OSU came back and won the game, 13-9 (OSU also won the entire
tournament).
Sharks
lost
their
next
two consoliation games, first a tough loss to Swathmore, then a half-hearted
effort against Queens college (by that point we just wanted to leave for Savannah).
Overall at Huck of the Irish: 4-4, 8th place.
In Savannah, the Sharks again got off to a good start,
going 6-0 the first two days. These wins included Day 1 wins over Clarkson, NYU,
and Macalster. On day two, the wins came over Georgia B, Wesleyan and Fordham. The
Sharks entered the third day ranked 3rd overall, behind Oklahoma and Marquette. However,
the tournament ended early when the Sharks lost point for the Universe to Carnegie
Mellon, ending a Bucknell run to tie the game at 11-11. Overall at High Tide
6-1, finishing somewhere between 4th and 8th place.
Next up for the Mudsharks is Huck of the Amish in Lancaster, this coming weekend.
3/8/06:Sharks leave on Sat morning for Huck of the Irish in Baltimore. Then Monday, we head down to Savannah.
3/4/06:Results from Salisburg:
The Sharks went 7-1 officially, beating West Virginia (twice), Messiah (twice) Towson B,
and Princeton, and a forfeit from either Drew or Syracuse (both teams left). This was the windest tournament
that any of today's Sharks have played in. Sustained winds above 10 mph both days, even zone O was hard to play.
But the sharks had a solid second day, stepping up to play Princeton who was definitely our best opponent.
2/27/06: Alright, the site is fully up to date again. The spring schedule is posted
with the exception of a date for sectionals (because we don't know that yet). For those who pay attention, you'll
notice we added "Huck of the Irish" at the start of spring break. It looks like a strong tournament, and the
Sharks are excited to see if we can hold our own against some good competition.
2/22/06: Tonight the Sharks rented out "The Sports Zone", an indoor arena
located 5 minutes from campus. We played some sweet late night ultimate, breaking into 2 teams and running
each other into the ground. It's fantastic to be able to play true ultimate in the winter. We are hoping
to go back to the Sports Zone again next week in preparation for Salisbury.
2/04/06:Yeah, just one more thing. One evening under
the lights, the Sharks were in the process of winning all the money at an ACE
sponsored tournament
when the original founder of the Mudsharks dropped by, just to say hello. That
was pretty sweet.
2/04/06:By the way, the Mudsharks had a pretty great spring season.
Our freshman class this fall was pretty huge, we were regularly getting 10 freshman at practice
in the fall.
As for fall tournaments, we started the season with Club Sectionals in Pittsburg,
where we went 1-4. However, that 1 win was over Penn State and its been quite awhile since we did that.
After Club Sectionals we went to a halloween tournament in Haverford (replacing the tradition Rochester,
where the tournament has been slowly falling apart). The Mudsharks went to Haverford with something to
prove, and rolled all the way to the tournament finals. Along the way we beat Lehigh, Maryland, John Hopkins,
NYU, and Haverford (always have to beat the hosts). We lost in the finals to Swathmore, 15-11. But it was
a sweet game and an excellent first tournament for the freshman. Oh yeah, we partied that school into the ground.
The Last Tournament of the fall was UDel. We went 3-2, with losses to Pitt and Delaware. Our wins were over
Penn and Mary & Washington.
2/04/06:Yes, it seems that this website has gone
5 months without being updated. But today brings a new day, in which the control of
the website has shifted, and updates will be returning. I've already gone and cleaned up
the roster and player bios. Next up, adding some freshman bios, and updating the schedule.
8/25/05: Well, skrimages/practice has started today,
and once we have a set schedule it will be listed here... If you come around
4:30 though, you'll be bound to find us practicing our craft. Sources say that
a certain wily brother of a certain wily asian alumni(codenamed "Spencer")
will be coming out to play tomorrow. The Mudsharks will be unstoppable!
The interest meeting will be probably held monday (time / loc TBA)... come by the Activities Fair on Friday from 7-9 in the Fieldhouse to find out more.
4/7/05: Not too much to say. Spring Fling was last weekend. Mud played Susquehanna and Case Western and beat them, though not as badly as we should have. We started our third game, but Dayan went to make a long cut and decided to try to ford the river that bisected the field. His wagon sank, one of his oxen drowned, and he broke an axle. After that we decided to call it a day. Tournament wound up being cancelled, so it was no big deal.
And of course, since we don't have any tournaments this weekend, the weather is incredible. 70 and sunny every day.
3/22/05: It's been a while since I updated, so here's the scoop. We're 11-4 this year, having gone 6-1 at Salisbury and 5-3 at High Tide. High Tide was excellent for reason I can't explain, and we have realized that as a team we have more fun than any other good team in the country. Psuedo-fest is this weekend, followed by Spring Phling, followed by a Jurassic 5 concert, followed by the FE exam for Evil, Maximus and I.
This is actually important: People on the team who have pictures: Put them in your public space and then LET ME KNOW YOU HAVE THEM. Or send them to me via IM. Get them to me. I need them.
2/14/05: Individual goals have been placed on the InterWeb here. I think Face may have confused Bruce with Buda. Pressure's on, boys. Who will become the best player the school has ever seen? Who will make our team run sprints?* Only time will tell!
*not 8-Bit, I can tell you that.
1/24/05: POW has been updated, as has the schedule. Learn to love the schedule, your social life will revolve around it (on weekends). Also, keep the weekend of March 26th open because we're going to try to have an alumni tournament.
1/17/05: Team meeting on Wednesday. 8:00 pm, back of the Bison (by the pool table). Yeah!
11/16/04: I hope you guys like... UPDATED PLAYER OF THE WEEK PAGE!
I hope you also like things that remind me of my childhood.
