Brothers,

The Kappa Chapter of Sigma Chi has achieved great success during the past year.  In the fall semester of 2007, we welcomed twenty new brothers who have taken on a disproportionately high number of leadership positions, five of whom sit on the executive board.  This new executive board is setting out to successfully execute the following three goals set forth by Pro Consul Matthew Walsh and myself:

1.     Strengthen Brotherhood and Encourage Diversity

2.     Restructure and Justify the Budget

3.     Improve the Fraternity/Administration Relationship

These broad goals were given practicality and specific deadlines during a workshop with Grand Praetor Bill Sapoch.  We came to realize that executive members and chairpersons would need the support of assistant positions and committees.  As such, social, kitchen, recruitment, and budget committees were created and have since motivated a greater percentage of brothers to participate in chapter events.  This has had the affect of strengthening brotherhood.  We further strengthened brotherhood by initiating a weekly brothers-only poker night and weekly brothers-only social events at the house.

Kappa did not receive any alcohol violations during the Fall 2007 semester while nearly doubling its social events.  This is tribute to the hard work of former Consul Mike Needham, Risk Managers Corey Teitz and Andrew Lair and the general support of the brothers in understanding the great risk we undertake during social events. It is always a goal to minimize risk and we certainly will strive to continue the trend set forth by the previous Executive Council.

Prior to last year, Kappa had suffered an unorganized budget.  This year, we reevaluated all of Kappa’s expenditures and, in doing so, cut unnecessary costs.  We have developed a very strict budget, set forth by Quaestor Christopher Yamaguchi, and will have plenty of funds to accomplish all of our necessary goals.

This spring, we won the Peterson Province cup, an award given to the province’s best Peterson application.  In addition to prestige, the award carries a $3,000 gift.  We hope to use the money to better the house’s trophy room. This Spring, we plan on winning again, based upon the meticulous Peterson written by Mike Needham and myself.

This summer, eight of our brothers will attend the Balfour Leadership Training Workshop. The brothers will take advantage of this opportunity and plan for the coming semester.  During the first week of the fall semester, we will host rush events and extend bids to a new pledge class.  Our new goals will focus upon fielding a strong pledge class and running a productive and organized pledge program.

On behalf of the Kappa Chapter of Sigma Chi at Bucknell University, I would like to take this opportunity to thank all who have helped both our chapter and the Sigma Chi Fraternity grow to become what it is today.  I also want to extend an open invitation to both undergraduate and alumni brothers to visit Kappa.  We look forward to meeting and working with you all in the coming year.
