I might want to join...
There are a lot of questions surrounding SERV, time commitments, physical requirements, and social repercussions. Hopefully the following FAQ will address those questions.
How much time does SERV take up?
SERV takes up as much time as you are willing to commit. The first couple months can be strenuous because the basic fire and medical training occurs. The classes are scheduled around the students campus life and are typically held in the evening at WCEC. The station is about a 10-15 minute walk from campus, a quick bike ride, or ask another SERV member for a ride. Once the basic training has been completed the member can respond to emergencies and of course continue to train, but the extent to which they participate is their perogative.
Will my social life suffer?
The time commitment to SERV is a personal choice. Several of our members can attest to double majors, fraternity/sorority life, an engineering degree (if you haven't figured it out by now, the engineers constantly whine about how difficult their schedules are), leadership in other campus groups, all while volunteering at WCEC. In addition, SERV is a pretty tight knit group, stop into Martin House and see for yourself!
Do I need previous training or experience?
No, as a SERV member you will receive training in EMS and/or Fire Fighting. We encourage all members to pursue both disciplines, but it is ultimately your choice.
I am already certified as a Firefighter and/or EMT does that help?
Great! You are ahead of the game. Speak to a SERV Officer to learn about reciprocity.
Still Unsure?
If you would like further information we invite you to explore this website, or even stop by the SERV house (Martin House) on St. Georges Street.
I would like to join SERV
Great! These first steps will start you on your way to a new and extremely rewarding activity.
- Contact our Social Officer (Rob Shanahan). He will help get the ball rolling.
- In addition to joining SERV if you wish to be an active EMT or firefighter, you must joing WCEC. Ask the social officer for an application. The application may seem a little daunting, if clarification or help is needed along the way do not hesitate to ask.
- The last hurdle will be an interview with WCEC. This is really an informal Q&A session where you can learn more about the station and they learn about your interests. A SERV member will also sit in on the interview so do not fret we will take care of you! Once the application and the interview have been completed the company will vote to either accept or deny you as a member, do not worry SERV members are never rejected. This meeting occurs at 7:30pm on the first friday of every month and lasts for a couple of hours with dinner following the meeting. You should try and attend this meeting so that you can meet all of the WCEC members. SERV will provide transportation if needed.
