THE
CONSTITUTION and BYLAWS of
STUDENTS FOR ASIAN AWARENESS AT
BUCKNELL
ARTICLE 1: NAME AND PURPOSE
Section 1: Name
The name of the organization shall be Students for Asian Awareness at Bucknell.
Section 2: Goals and Objectives
The organization shall have the following goals and objectives:
a) To increase awareness of the Asian and Asian American heritage.
1) Through various aspects of the curriculum and social campus-wide functions.
2) To break through myths and stereotypes of Asians and Asian Americans.
b) To provide a support system for students who can relate to one another in a comfortable and social atmosphere to grow, learn, and cooperate.
c) To unite and be the voice of the Asian and Asian American community at Bucknell.
d) To promote a multicultural education for a multi-ethnic society.
ARTICLE II:
MEMBERSHIP
Section 1: Qualifications
a) Membership shall be open to the Bucknell University community.
b) Membership is voluntary and new members shall be welcome throughout the year.
c) Membership shall be maintained in the organization only by active participation in meetings and activities.
d) A membership fee may be implemented in times of financial stress as deemed necessary by the majority of the general membership and the majority of the Executive Committee.
Section 2: Determining Membership
a) Membership shall be renewed every academic year.
b) Membership shall be confirmed based on the degree of individual participation as determined by the Executive Committee.
c) If an individual’s membership is in question, that person shall be notified by the Vice President of Communications. If that person wishes to remain a member, the person’s name shall remain on the roster. If that person does not wish to remain a member, the person’s name shall be removed from the roster.
d) Members abroad for a semester or a year shall have their membership renewed upon their return to Bucknell.
Section 3: Responsibilities
a) Members shall not make any decision individually for the organization without any approval from the Executive Committee and/or the general membership.
b) Each member of the organization has the responsibility to uphold the goals and ideals of and to abide by the constitution.
Section 4: Directory
a) Membership shall be recorded by the member’s name, year of graduation, box number, campus address, and phone number.
b) Membership is recorded and maintained by the Vice President of Communications.
c) Directories shall be distributed to all members at the start of the fall semester or the first semester of the academic year.
ARTICLE III: ORGANIZATIONAL STRUCTURE
Section 1: The structure of the organization shall
consist of two components:
a) The general membership
b) The executive officers
Section 2: Special committees shall be initiated by the Executive Committee and shall be composed of the general membership.
ARTICLE IV: ELECTED OFFICERS
Section 1: There shall be six elected officers: the
President, Vice President of Operations, Vice President of Finance, Vice
President of Academics and Political Affairs, Vice President of Social Affairs,
and the Vice President of Communications.
Section 2: Duties of Elected Officers
Duties may overlap and depend on what is most convenient.
a) President:
1) Responsible for representing the organization at all functions and meetings outside the organization.
2) Maintain contact and communication with administrators, university
personnel, and other organizations.
3) Convene and preside at all meetings of the Executive Committee and
the general membership.
4) Delegate duties to the Vice-Presidents.
5) Responsible for inviting past Executives of the organization for
further advisement at Executive Committee meetings.
6) Responsible for bringing attention to issues and functions relevant
to the organization both inside and outside of the campus.
b) Vice President of
Operations:
1) Be present at general and executive meetings.
2) Determine organization’s intra-organizational goals of the year.
3) Review and approve agenda for general meetings.
4) Call, organize, and manage nominations and elections.
5) Be a student liaison between the organization and other
organizations on campus (i.e. BCA).
6) Take over when President is unable to fulfill duties.
c) Vice President of Finance:
1) Represent the organization during appropriations.
2) Develop budget and maintain the current status of financial records.
3) Responsible for the appropriation of funds, reimbursements, payments, accounts received, etc.
4) Responsible for communication with relevant financial personnel.
5) Responsible for raising funds (i.e. vendors).
d) Vice President of
Academics and Political Affairs:
1) Work for the expansion of Asian and Asian American student admissions.
2) Work with administrators and university personnel on furthering the Asian and Asian American studies programs through the East Asian Studies Department and other related departments.
3) Provide input regarding potential Asian and/or Asian American faculty, administrators, and university personnel.
e) Vice President of Social
Affairs:
1) Organize activities based on the interests of the organization.
2) Assist in social functions and activities both inside and outside of the organization.
3) Help promote internal, social unity within the organization.
4) Plan out a practical social activity agenda.
f) Vice President of
Communications:
1) Maintain an accurate roster and membership directory.
2) Publicize all meetings, events, and activities.
3) Responsible for semester calendar.
4) Inform Executive Committee of activities both inside and outside of the organization.
