Community Service

The sisters of Delta Phi try to help the community as much as possible. Many sisters are involved in other organizations and help plan community service events.

Locks of Love – For the third straight year, the Delta Phi chapter has co-sponsored and ran the Locks of Love hair drive at Bucknell. For weeks before the drive sisters volunteered their time sewing headbands for the donors, getting people to sign up to donate their hair, and finding hair stylists to cut the hair. During the day of the actual hair drive, sisters spent their time actually running the drive and supporting the girls who were donating their hair. This year we collected 136 ponytails totaling almost 100 feet of hair, more than three times the amount of hair collected last year. Sixty five people from Bucknell donated their hair - twenty two of them were sisters of the Delta Phi Chapter. Visit the Locks of Love website. Start growing your hair for our next Locks of Love hair drive in February.

Relay for Life – One of our own sisters helped plan Bucknell’s first Relay for life last year, and it was very successful. Our sisters were all there to participate and support our sister. This year we will be entering at least one team in the event.

Special Olympics – Our chapter partnered up with the brothers of Chi Phi to organize and hold Bucknell’s first Special Olympics on April 9, 2006. Athletes competed in swimming events and were supported by our sisters and provided lunch.

Neighborhood Thaw Out – A day organized by Bucknell during which groups of students get together to do any kind of yardwork or jobs which the local businesses need done. Our chapter provides several groups to help with this event each year.

Community Day – Another event organized by Bucknell which is a day to try to give back to the community for all of their support. Organizations organize their own booths or tables at which they have activities for children. This year we sponsored a Hawaiian booth where children could have hoo-la-hoop contests.
