About Bucknell Hillel

Hillel: the Foundation for Jewish Campus Life provides opportunities for Jewish students to explore their heritage, pursue Social Justice and participate in the larger Jewish Community at many post secondary education intsitutions including Bucknell. So what sets Bucknell Hillel apart from other Hillel's? Why Bucknell of course. With Bucknell University's emphasis on building closely knit communities, it is only natural for Bucknell Hillel to form a social vertex for drawing together students. It is with the support of the community then that Bucknell Hillel can reach out to accomplish the goals tzedek (social justice), tikkun olam (repairing the world) and Jewish learning.

Social Justice

Deuteronomy 16:20 commands: Justice, justice shall you pursue. Just Give PEACE a Chance In a world that is broken we must take responsibility to help repair it. At Bucknell Hillel we participate in any number of social justice activities including raising money for Mazon: a Jewish response to hunger; working at Community Harvest, the local soup kitchen; participating in the Lewisburg clean up; participating in the “Stop the Hate” march and rally, and going to D.C, to protest the ongoing genocide in the Darfur area of Sudan.

Community Service

At Bucknell Hillel we believe the campus community as well as the greater Lewisburg community is our home. We sponsor educational programs as well as hands on activities for those who are interested in learning about Bucknell Hillel in particular and about Jews and Judaism in general. We celebrate Hanukkah by bringing the story and the rituals to the children in the after-school program at the Heiter Community Center. We sponsor Holocaust speakers, one in the fall on Kristallnacht and one in the spring, on Yom HaShoah. We participate in the many food drives, fund raisers and community service projects that take place on and off campus. Bucknell Hillel — building communities one good deed at a time.

Jewish Learning

Learning is the thread that weaves through all of life. Bucknell Hillel sponsors events that teach, make us laugh, lift up our spirit and help us to sing and stomp our feet. Not only do we invite speakers, but we sponsor musical events like the Afro-Semitic Experience and the Old World Folk Band. We have informal leaning experiences like Death by Chocolate and Sex and Chinese Food. We invite scholars from outside as well as Bucknell faculty to expand our understanding of Jewish live and culture.

Services

Shabbat Services are held every Friday evening at 5:30 pm in the Berelson Center for Jewish Life. Holiday services for Rosh HaShannah and Yom Kippur are hold on campus as well as two seders for Passover. We build a sukkah for Sukkot and dance with the Torah on Simchat Torah.
