Equestrian team co-hosts IHSA event
For the first time in more than three years, the University’s equestrian team (BUET) bested Penn State University in the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association (IHSA) show for region three at Briarwood Farms. N.J. Sarah Schubert ’10 earned reserve high point rider in the win over the seven-team field.
The show was co-hosted by the University and Franklin and Marshall. The Bison victory over the Nittany Lions was also the first since the Orange and Blue joined the new region. The win was also the first for the new Head Coach Farra Phillips-Hillyard.
“The most exciting pinning was Sarah Schubert who won reserve high point rider of the day,” Captain Kelly Henkler ’09 said.
The high point rider is given to the rider who earns the most points during the day of competition. As each rider can only participate in a maximum of two events, the recipient often must take first both times, according to Henkler. Schubert earned a blue ribbon for first place in both of her preliminary events, placing her in a three-way tie for the high point rider.
“The judge watches the three riders ride at the same time and determines the winner through some simple equitation tests,” Henkler said.
“It was great that we could finally beat Penn State” Schubert said. “We really came together as a team and rode well.”
Several other riders were instrumental in the win.
Nicole Lake ’12 won the intermediate equitation over fences class while Danielle Pizzo ’11 won the open equitation on the flat class. Meg Fleischli ’09 won the novice equitation over fences class. Kaitie Rubin ’11 won the novice equestrian on the flat class and Ali Sepe ’09 won the beginner walk trot canter class.
