Club History

The BU Shotokan Karate Club was started in the Fall of 1999 by Ahren Green, a graduate student at Bucknell who was also a Nidan, a second-degree black belt in Shotokan Karate. By the end of the first year there were five people in the club, three of whom were graduating. Sensei Green finished his graduate degree at Bucknell that year and secured a job at Merck in New Jersey, where he now teaches another Shotokan Club.

Instruction of the Bucknell club was taken over by Jason Haase, a Sandan, or third-degree black belt. Since that first year the club has tripled in size and continues to flourish. From white belts to brown belts, our members represent a broad range of ability. Over the next few years, we will have students going for their dan exam, or black belt; an honor achieved only through continous hard work and dedication.
