Brief History

Policy on Pledging

Below are excerpts from the Alpha Phi Omega Iota Kappa chapter by-laws governing our policy on pledging:

General Pledgeship shall be open to all currently enrolled undergraduate students at Bucknell University. Pledgeship will not exclude students of any sex, race, creed, color, course of study, or fraternal affiliation as specified by the National Fraternity.

Pledges are supervised by the Membership Vice President and the Pledge Trainer(s). Upon completion of the pledge's program, the Membership Vice President shall invite the pledge to participate in the Fraternity as an active member. If during their first pledgeship the said pledge does not fulfill all the requirements of the Pledge Training Program, the pledge may request to continue Pledge status. This status can be granted if the Chapter Executive Committee recommends it to the Brotherhood and the Brotherhood approves this request by a majority vote. If granted, the pledge is expected to fulfill all of the requirements of the Pledge Training Program within the first six (6) weeks of the next consecutive pledge class. If the pledge fails to complete the pledge Training Program in the allotted time, then they shall be denied Membership status.

[on hazing]

We, as Brothers of the Iota Kappa Chapter, do not submit pledges to mental or physical harassment, obligate pledges to perform personal services, degrade pledges in any way, violate the rights of pledges, or impose any physical punishment or harm upon them.

  1. Hazing of pledges in the Iota Kappa Chapter shall include:
    1. any form of mental or physical harassment of a pledge
    2. any demands imposed upon a pledge that are not in accordance with the Pledge Training Program as outlined in these by-laws
    3. any degradation of a pledge
    4. any behavior or acts which a brother, pledge, or outside individual could possibly view as infringing upon the rights of a pledge
    5. any mental or physical punishment imposed upon a pledge
    6. any other actions which may be defined as hazing by federal, state, county, or municipal laws.

  2. The Chapter's policy on hazing shall be kept on file with the Chapter President and the Membership Vice President. This policy shall be given to the members of each pledge class at the beginning of each pledge period.

  3. Incidents which are suspected of being in violation of this hazing policy shall be dealt with in the following manner:
    1. A brother or pledge may bring the incident to the attention of an Executive Committee member.
    2. The Chapter Executive Committee will attempt to quickly and quietly resolve the conflict between the parties involved.
    3. In extreme cases, the Chapter Executive Committee may move to suspend the accused brother following the guidelines outlined in Article VIII of these By-laws.
