Procedure for Recognizing New Greek Organizations*

In order to ensure that very careful and thorough consideration is given requests by student groups to become affiliated as a colony of a national fraternity, the procedure below must be followed.

The purpose of the procedure is to determine insofar as possible that the requesting group actually gives promise of becoming successfully established and of contributing in worthwhile ways to the life of the University community.

Section I

A. A group desiring Bucknell University recognition as a potential chapter of a national fraternity will be required to submit to the Council on Greek Life a detailed statement indicating the group's purposes and goals.

B. The group must provide a statement indicating the reasons it believes an additional fraternity is both needed and desirable.

C. Upon receipt of the group's "Statement of Purposes and Goals" and the reasons it believes an additional fraternity is both needed and desirable, the Council on Greek Life will undertake consideration of the question of whether or not the establishment of a new fraternity at Bucknell University is presently appropriate. If the Council on Greek Life’s deliberation results in a negative conclusion, the matter is closed.

Section II

A. If the Council on Greek Life rules that the group may apply formally for recognition, the group will be required to submit to the Council on Greek Life, through the Chairperson, ten copies of its "Application of Recognition as a Colony of a National Fraternity." The "Application" shall contain the following information:

1. The statement of Purpose, etc., previously submitted.

2. A list of the names of the officers and adviser(s), and the number of members at the time of application.

3. A statement describing the dues and fees it plans to charge for the operation of the colony.

4. A statement outlining the group's plans for housing and feeding members, if applicable.

5. A statement explaining membership requirements if in any way different from those of the national with which it plans to affiliate.

6. An outline of its proposed fraternal activities for the coming year.

7. A statement indicating how the group will contribute to campus life, e.g., what programs will the group develop or sponsor that will have an impact on the intellectual and cultural life of the campus.

8. A statement from the national office of the fraternity with which it intends to affiliate indicating:

a. its reasons for wishing to establish a chapter at Bucknell;
b. its requirements and procedures for establishing a new chapter;
c. the nature of the commitment of professional staff to assist with and supervise the development of the group colonization period;
d. the financial support; if any, it would provide the colony, and the financial support it regularly provides chapters;
e. the assistance and supervision it regularly provides chapters in terms of house management, food service, scholarship, new member training, group discipline, etc.;
f. its membership requirements, new member education program, procedures for initiating individual members, and assurances that the national does not discriminate on the basis of race, religion, color, ancestry, sexual orientation, or national origin. If membership in the organization is open to both men and women, that should be indicated and assurances given that membership requirements for both men and women are identical.
g. its policy concerning hazing;
h. the regular dues and fees collected by the national from its chapters and individual members;
i. a statement indicating how the group will develop an active alumni corporation, select an alumni adviser and university adviser.

III. The Council on Greek Life will forward a copy of the application materials to the Interfraternity Council or Panhellenic Council for its information and advice. After reviewing the recommendation of the Interfraternity or Panhellenic Council, the Council on Greek Life will forward their recommendations to the Committee on Complementary Activities.

IV. The Committee on Complementary Activities will then make the final determination concerning recognition, subject to review by the President of the University.

VI. If the Committee on Complementary Activities acts favorable upon the application for recognition, it will prescribe the length of the colonization period.

* Should a group desire recognition as a local fraternity, the appropriate items of the procedure for recognition will be applied. Items IA and IIA of this procedure must be followed by groups re-establishing (re-colonizing) a chapter.
