CODE OF ETHICS

Fundamental Principles

Engineers uphold and advance the integrity, honor and dignity of the engineering profession by:

  1. Using their knowledge and skill for the enhancement of human welfare;
  2. Being honest and impartial and serving with fidelity the public, their employers and clients;
  3. Striving to increase the competence and prestige of the engineering profession; and
  4. Supporting the professional and technical societies of their disciplines.

Fundamental Canons

  1. Engineers shall hold paramount the safety, health, and welfare of the public in the performance of their professional duties.
  2. Engineers shall perform services only in areas of their competence.
  3. Engineers shall issue public statements only in an objective and truthful manner.
  4. Engineers shall act in professional matters for each employer or client as faithful agents or trustees, and shall avoid conflicts of interest.
  5. Engineers shall build their professional reputation on the merit of their services and shall not compete unfairly with others.
  6. Engineers shall act in such a manner as to uphold and enhance the honor, integrity, and dignity of the engineering profession.
  7. Engineers shall continue their professional development throughout their careers, and shall provide opportunities for the professional development of those engineers under their supervision.

 


 

BYLAWS (updated 2004)

ARTICLE I. Name, Emblem

1. Abbreviation. The approved abbreviation of the name of the Society, where an abbreviation is proper, shall be ASCE.

2. Emblem. The design, specification, and the guidelines for the use of the emblem of the Society shall be as prescribed by the National Board.

ARTICLE II. Membership.

1. All students may become members of the Student Chapter. To become members, biographical information must be supplied, including name, address, phone number, and email address. Dues must be remitted in full at time of joining.

2. A membership drive will be conducted in the Fall and Spring of each year.

ARTICLE III. Chapter Dues

1. Membership is contingent upon an initial payment of $5 to the chapter for the first year's dues.

2. When renewing yearly dues, the charge is $5 to any member.

ARTICLE IV. Meetings

1. Officer meetings shall be held once-a-week unless extenuating circumstances prevail. Consideration should be taken to a time when the advisor can attend along with all elected officers.

2. Meetings of the entire society will be announced via signage, e-mail, and class representatives. At least one meeting each semester is expected along with several social gatherings and technical presentations. At any of these gatherings, Chapter business can be relayed to the general membership.

ARTICLE V. Officers

ARTICLE V. Elections

1. Elections shall take place in December of each year. New officers begin at the start of the spring semester.

2. The elected officers must be members at the time of election.

3. The Freshman Class Representative shall not be elected in December, but in the Spring of their first year, in the same way other elections were held.

4. Election Procedure. Notification and description of all officer positions will be distributed to all civil engineering classes. Nominations will be taken. Students may nominate themselves or a fellow student. All nominated persons shall write a short statement of goals and qualifications to be distributed/read at the time of elections.

5. Ballot. VP Technical shall create a ballot of all nominees and all positions which will be distributed to all civil engineering classes for voting. Ballots will be collected and tabulated by the President and Vice-President. Class representatives may only be elected by their class year. For each office, the member receiving the most votes shall be declared elected.

ARTICLE VI. Annual Report

1. To assist in completing the annual report, the VP Technical shall keep paper record of all events and speakers which take place. Including, date, subject, number in attendance, and contact information.

2. The annual report which is to be submitted each February to the National office shall be compiled primarily by the outgoing officers with assistance by the new officers.

ARTICLE VII. Newsletter

The Student Chapter should make every effort possible to distribute a newsletter to the student civil engineering body at least once each semester.

ARTICLE VII. Amendments

Amendments to these bylaws are at the discretion of the Officers. A vote of two-thirds is necessary to amend these Bylaws.
